Lisa Houghton, 31, and her husband Anthony, 33, recently purchased their dream home using the Help to Buy Equity Loan scheme.

The couple, from Lancashire, already owned their own home, but after having their little boy Jack they decided they wanted to sell to be nearer to family.

Lisa explains, “We bought our first home 11 years ago, we then moved to Chorley where we had our little boy, and it was then that we decided we wanted to move to East Lancs to be nearer to family. We looked at other houses and other areas, but kept coming back to this site as moving closer to family was our main priority and it was in an ideal location.”

The site in question was Dale Moor View, a Taylor Wimpey development in Rossendale. Situated on the outskirts of Rawtenstall, close to the beautiful Rossendale Valley, the development is still near to the town centre and amenities needed for daily life, something the couple really liked.

“It’s really quiet and rural”, says Lisa, “We’re surrounded by trees and it’s so pretty. But we’re still close to the motorway and everything we need, its ideal.”

The fact they could use Help to Buy was also ideal for the couple. As existing homeowners, they were able to use the equity from the home they were selling as a deposit, and also take advantage of an equity loan meaning they could buy their home for the future.

Through the Help to Buy Equity Loan scheme, you only need to raise a 5% deposit and can access the support of up to 20% in the form of an equity loan from the Government. There's nothing to pay on the loan for the first five years as it is interest free for that time.

Lisa says, “Without Help to Buy we wouldn’t have been able to buy when we did as we wouldn’t have had a deposit. We would have had to stay and save longer, so it definitely helped us a lot.”

The couple also found the process really easy and were surprised by how smooth everything went.

“Our Mortgage Advisor helped with the application and it was so easy. She handled everything from our application to our mortgage, she was brilliant. Taylor Wimpey was great too - everything was just really easy and smooth - there were no hiccups at all!” says Lisa.

She continues, “I’ve been recommending the scheme to lots of people. Some have heard about it and some haven’t but they all have lots of questions. I just tell them how easy and how much more affordable it was. The only advice I would give is to choose a solicitor and mortgage advisor who know the scheme, as it makes things so much easier.”

The couple, along with Jack are now all settled and enjoying life in their new home.

“This is it now,” says Lisa, “This is our forever home, we’re not moving again! We couldn’t ask for anything more.”
