Husband and wife Alice and Daniel Milner weren't even planning on buying a new home but the Help to Buy Show Manchester changed all that.
Alice, 26, who works for Key 103 Radio Station, heard the advertisement for the show played at work one day and convinced husband Daniel, 28, to go along.
She explains, "We've been renting for 6 years and weren't planning to buy but as soon as I heard about the show I went on the website and downloaded a ticket. I knew a little bit about Help to Buy so I thought it would be a good opportunity to see what our options were."
Through the Help to Buy scheme, you only need to raise a 5% deposit and can access the support of up to 20% in the form of an equity loan from the Government. There's nothing to pay on the loan for five years as it is interest free until year 6.
The Help to Buy Show helps promote the scheme offering prospective buyers the chance to meet with property developers, independent financial advisors and solicitors in a non-pressurised environment, something Alice and Daniel found really useful.
Alice says, "It was really great to have people to talk to about Help to Buy and to see all the upcoming developments in our area. The mortgage advice was so helpful too, we were able to sit down with an advisor one-on-one and assess our affordability so we knew what was in our price range."
The couple visited various exhibitors at the show and when they were introduced to Birkacre Park, a Miller Homes development in Chorley, they decided to take a look that day.
"After the show we drove from Manchester to Chorley, and as soon as we drove onto the site we fell in love," Alice says. "We're quite outdoorsy so the fact it was surrounded by fields really appealed to us, and the location meant we would be closer to my parents too. It ticked all the boxes."
After looking around the show home and speaking with the Sales Advisor, they decided they wanted to go ahead and two months later were back living with Daniel's parents.
Alice explains, "Once we decided to go ahead we knew we had to get the money together for the deposit so we moved in with Daniel's parents in order to save. Even though we're back living at home, Help to Buy has made it a lot easier for us and means we'll have our deposit much quicker."
She goes on further to say, "Although we weren't looking for a new home, the Help to Buy Show really gave us the push we needed and it actually came at a really good time. We were renting an old cottage which had damp, and because I have asthma it was making me ill. So I'm really looking forward to moving into a brand new house!"
The couple don't have long to wait as their new home will be ready in September, and they've enjoyed watching it be built for the last couple of months.
Alice reveals, "We keep going down every week to take pictures of where it's up to, we can't wait to move in! We had no idea that by going along to the Help to Buy Show we'd be walking away with a new home, but we're so glad we did. We would definitely recommend the show to anyone thinking of buying a new home."
The next Help to Buy Show is being held at the BT Convention Centre, Liverpool on Saturday 5 September, 10am-4pm.
