A locksmith says the Government’s Help to Buy scheme was the key to him and his partner getting on the housing ladder.

John Douglas, 29, and Laura Cookson, 24, used the scheme to purchase a three-bedroom detached house at Bloor Homes’ Saxon Gate development in Crewe.

And the couple, who welcomed their first child Lachlan into the world soon after moving in, are loving life as parents and homeowners.

John, who was born and bred in Crewe, said: “Our lives have got a lot busier now. Owning a house and having a child does make you feel very grown up, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.

“Using Help to Buy was really easy. We didn’t have to do anything after we’d signed a few documents, Bloor Homes’ independent financial advisor did the rest of it.”

The Help to Buy scheme enables buyers to purchase a new build home with a five per cent deposit and 75 per cent mortgage, with the remaining 20 per cent being provided by the Government as an equity loan, interest free for the first five years.

The scheme can be used on purchases up to £600,000 and is available to existing homeowners as well as first time buyers.

John and Laura were both impressed by Saxon Gate’s build quality, showhome and location.

John said: “We looked at a lot of homes and the build quality of Bloor really stood out. We had visited quite a few showhomes and the one at Saxon Gate was the best by far.

“It’s a great location, especially for me. Having this new housing development near to where I grew up was just ideal really. I have family living about 100 yards away, which is great with having Lachlan.

“It’s very easy to get to the motorway from Saxon Gate and there are lots of facilities nearby. It’s a great place to live.”

Saxon Gate has something for everyone, with a range of two, three and four-bedroom properties currently available, priced between £98,000 and £264,995.
