When Ramesh Pogathota and his wife Supriya heard about Help to Buy they knew their dream of owning their own home was within their reach.
Ramesh, a Data Analyst originally from India, came to the UK to study in 2003. He met Supriya in 2006 and they both settled here full time in 2008, when Ramesh gained full-time employment.
They moved around quite a bit due to Ramesh’s job - always in rented accommodation - but eventually settled in Stockport. It was here that they began to think of buying their first house, but were discouraged when they learned of the huge deposit requirements.
Ramesh explains, “We had been looking for a house to buy, but unfortunately the soaring prices and deposits needed made us give up the idea. Then I heard about Help to Buy through a friend of mine who came across the scheme on the television. This prompted us to revisit our dream of buying our own house, so we started looking out for developments that were offering Help to Buy.”
That’s when they came across Beacon Gardens, a Pembroke Homes development offering Help to Buy in Romiley, Stockport.
Through the Help to Buy Equity Loan scheme, you only need to raise a 5% deposit and can access the support of up to 20% in the form of an equity loan from the Government. There's nothing to pay on the loan for the first five years as it is interest free for that time.
The smaller deposit requirement and support of an equity loan meant the couple could buy their home of the future sooner than expected. They purchased a lovely 4 bed detached home – perfect for their family of four.
Ramesh says, “Once we found the property, the application process was very straightforward. It was easy to complete and the processing didn’t take much time either. I contacted the Help to Buy North West team as I had a few queries and they were very friendly and answered my questions very patiently and politely.”
The couple, along with their son and daughter, moved into their new home earlier this year and are now enjoying life as homeowners.
“Help to Buy is the reason why we are in our new home,” Ramesh says, “If it wasn’t for the scheme we wouldn’t have been able to buy this home at all. Now is definitely the time to buy if you have saved enough for a deposit, and with Help to buy you can get the home that you always dreamed of.”
He added, “I would like to thank Help to Buy North West for giving us an opportunity and helping us get through the process quickly in getting the required equity loan.”
