Megan Corless, 27, has recently purchased her very first home with the assistance of Help to Buy. It was a bit of a family affair as the Recruitment Consultant from Warrington was actually recommended the scheme by her cousin who also purchased her first home with Help to Buy!
"I know a few people who have used the scheme but it was my cousin who really sold it to me," Megan explains, "She works in property and was able to explain everything to me so I fully understood it. I had been looking at older houses to buy, but realised I wouldn't be able to afford one on my own, so her advice really cemented my decision to use the scheme on a new-build home."
Through the Help to Buy scheme, you only need to raise a 5% deposit and can access the support of up to 20% in the form of an equity loan from the Government. There's nothing to pay on the loan for five years and, best of all, the loan is interest free for that time.
After making her decision to use Help to Buy, Megan sold her car to put towards her deposit and started looking for homes online. That's where she came across Riverside Point, a Persimmon Homes development in Warrington, where she eventually bought her two bedroom apartment. And after initially considering older homes, Megan is now happy she decided to buy a new-build home.
"It ticks all the boxes," she says, "and as a first-time buyer I just think you have so much more assurance with a new-build. The fact everything is brand new and comes with guarantees is great."
She also couldn't believe how smooth the whole process was, including applying for the Help to Buy Equity Loan.
"Buying my first home was really easy, and the Help to Buy equity loan application was so straight-forward. My independent financial advisor and solicitor, who were recommended to me by Persimmon, made things a lot easier and practically held my hand through the whole thing. There were no issues or hold-ups- it's amazing how easy it really is!"
Megan received the keys to her new home in December, and enjoyed her last Christmas at home with her parents before moving into her new home earlier this year.
"It's an amazing feeling, knowing that something is yours," says Megan, "I felt really proud when I got my keys, and I love the freedom of owning my own home."
And now that she has used Help to Buy will she be recommending the scheme to others too?
Megan said, "Help to Buy was the difference between me owning my own home and not, so I'll definitely be recommending it to anyone looking to buy a home!"
